2017 Dance Themes Are Here!

sun-01323One of our many fun traditions at GAC is our camp dance. On the Thursday before each two-week session ends (and the final evening of our one week sessions), all campers and staff attend a themed dance. Dances are a great way for us to celebrate the conclusion of a fun-filled session.

Excitement for the dance builds throughout the session, and we practice dancing regularly, including before our daily Morning Assembly and even at some meals.

On the day of the dance, as soon as dinner ends, campers head back to their cabins to get ready. They, and their counselors, put on their costumes as the excitement builds. Costumes and props are either brought from home or made at camp. Some people go bargain hunting at the thrift store or at after Halloween sales to find treasures that fit with their session’s dance theme. Counselors really get into finding ways to interpret the theme.

gac-2011-4129Once everyone is ready to go, campers and counselors head to the dining porch, which has been transformed by our Junior Counselors into a wonderland decorated to match the dance’s theme. After group pictures, it’s onto the dining porch to dance the night away. The DJ plays all of the favorites, from Footloose to the Dino Stomp, and campers participate in a high-energy evening of fun.

July-4th-6081For those campers who are not as excited about dancing, there are games and crafts set up so that they can be part of the fun without having to cut a rug. Throughout the dance there are snacks and drinks, a photo backdrop to pose in front of, and lots of opportunities for fun.

We’re excited to announce our dance themes for 2017! We can’t wait to see what campers and staff come up with for costumes!

June Shaver Specialty Camp: Zoo-topia

G-1658We invite our June Specialty campers to embrace their wild side inside the Zoo. Do you want to come as a solitary sloth? Perhaps your whole cabin will be a family of meerkats. Maybe you want to be a zookeeper or veterinarian.

Session 1: Party in the USA

Session One campers are in camp for Independence Day! What better way to celebrate than decking out in our best red, white, and blue or patriotic-themed costumes?

Session 2: Enchantment Under the Sea

Session Two campers find themselves walking in the shoes of Marty McFly and Doc Brown as they attend the “Enchantment Under the Sea” dance. Don’t like time travel? That’s great, because you could also embrace the belief that life is better down where it’s wetter, under the sea.

Session 3: Go Green

gac-2011-4175Going green is a great way to help save the planet. We embrace the concept of reduce, recycle, and reuse so much that we’re theming an entire dance around it. You can recycle a costume, come as a recyclable good, or you can just wear every item of green-colored clothing you can find!

Session 4: Under the Big Top

What will you be, a lion, a tiger, a bear, or an “oh my”? Perhaps you have a future as a ringmaster, or a bearded lady, or a star on the flying trapeze. If you’ve always dreamed of running away and joining the circus, all you have to do is come to the Under the Big Top dance at GAC this summer!

Mini-Camp and August Shaver Specialty: HalloweenPumpkins-2

It’s no tricks but all treats as Mini Campers and Shaver Specialty campers dress up in their best Halloween garb. Perhaps you’ll choose to come as a ghoul, a goblin, or a wicked witch? Maybe you’ll just come as a GAC-O-Lantern? Or, because it’s Halloween, you can dress up as anything you’d like!

We’re looking forward to another summer full of fun, friends, growth, and lots and lots of dancing!

Meet Our Staff: Freckles!

We’re looking forward to Freckles joining us for her third year at Gold Arrow Camp!  She’ll be the Special Events Coordinator, taking care of everything from Tigers’ Bingo to Dances and Carnival!

She is currently a Junior at the University of California, Berkeley, studying Political Science.  Freckles is the Under-Secretary-General of Special Events for the Berkeley Model United Nations and is a member of the Student Union Program, Entertainment, and Recreation Board, which organizes events for students.  In her free time, she enjoys running, playing soccer, and drawing.  This fall, Freckles has been accepted to the Global & International Studies program at Meiji Gakuin University and will be studying in Japan in the fall.

C-C03-8232We love Freckles’ bright, easygoing personality.  Her campers describe her as fun, encouraging, outgoing, and “someone who makes you feel special.”  She isn’t afraid to be silly, and you can always count on her to join any dance party without thinking twice.  We’re excited for the crazy fun she brings to life at GAC, whether shooting arrows at Archery in her banana costume or introducing us to a new camp song at Morning Assembly (probably while wearing her banana costume)!

Check out Freckles’ answers to some questions we asked her!

1. Why do you want to come back to camp again?

I love working with kids, and I love happy people. At GAC I get to do all my favorite activities—backpacking, kayaking, rock-climbing, etc.—with my favorite kind of people. What’s not to love?

2BP-C03-1434. If you could wake up tomorrow having gained any one ability, what would it be?

If we’re talking super powers, it would definitely be the ability to teleport. Just think of all the places you could go in the blink of an eye, not to mention all the money you’d save on plane tickets. On a more realistic level, I’ve always wanted to play the guitar. It’d be pretty sweet if I could wake up one day and strum whatever song was going through my head.

3. What is your favorite part of camp?

MeetOurStaff_FrecklesMy favorite part of camp is the dance. Who doesn’t love to dance like a crazy person with all of their closest friends? I’d have to say that bedtime is a close second though. I love checking in with each of my campers, hearing how their days went before saying good night. Then, there’s the peaceful silence filled with happy memories from the day before and excited anticipation for the day to come. And of course nothing beats falling asleep under a blanket of stars.

4. If you could travel the world, what would be your top five destinations?

Tibet, Argentina, Singapore, South Africa, Scotland

Stargirl_large5. What is your favorite book to read at camp?

My favorite book to read is probably Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli. I’ve always admired the main character Susan, who refuses to worry about what others think of her. She doesn’t try to be like anyone else, despite pressure from her peers. She’s always 100% Susan.

Theme-69526. If you were shrunk to the size of a pencil and put in a blender, how would you get out?

Well that’s one of the most interesting questions I’ve ever heard…I think I’d jump from wall to wall, using my ninja skills to scale up the sides of the blender and escape.

7. You’re at the Carnival at camp. Where do you go first: Popcorn, Cotton Candy, Snow Cone, Pickle, or Nachos??

8. If you could pick anyone in the world to host Morning Assembly, who would it be?

Oprah (no explanation necessary).

9. What three items would you take with you on a deserted island?

My closed-toe shoes, my water bottle, and my sunscreen.

10. What are you most looking forward to about GAC 2015??

I’m excited to see all my old friends and hear about all the exciting things they’ve done this past year. I also can’t wait to meet all the new counselors and campers. I’m counting down the days until I can turn off my phone and just focus on enjoying the outdoors with the people I love.
